National ICEE Day: A Cool Brand Turns Nostalgia Into Strategy
The smartest brands don’t just sell products. They create memories people want to relive.
There are some brands you have to explain.
And then there are brands that need only four letters—the clean, cool kind.
ICEE.
Say it, and chances are pretty good you can see it.
The unmistakable red-and-blue cup. The polar bear. The brain freeze. The first glorious sip of Cherry or Blue Raspberry.
And maybe—even better—you remember where you were when you had one.
That’s the magic of an iconic brand.
And this week, ICEE showed us something else: how to put that magic back to work.
The ICEE Company kicked off its first-ever National ICEE Day on August 18, with participating retailers offering free small ICEEs and a broader social campaign designed to get consumers sharing their own ICEE memories.
That’s not just a promotion.
That’s branding with an icy pulse!
The brilliant part?
They’re not asking us to discover ICEE They’re asking us to remember it.
And that’s a very different assignment.
ICEE isn’t a startup trying to explain why frozen carbonated beverages are cool.
It is a brand with decades of accumulated cultural equity.
The company was founded in 1967, has grown into a globally recognized frozen beverage brand and today calls Middle Tennessee home. Its headquarters are in La Vergne, just outside Nashville.
ICEE itself says it is the world’s No. 1 frozen beverage brand, with more than 500 million frozen beverages served each year.
That’s an extraordinary brand asset.
But here’s the WordSmith question:
What do you do with an iconic brand when everybody already knows you?
You don’t simply remind people that you exist.
You give them a reason to feel something again.
That’s Where National ICEE Day Gets Really Smart
The campaign turns a product into a cultural moment.
A free ICEE gets people moving.
A national day gives the moment a name.
Social sharing gives people a reason to participate.
And nostalgia gives them something to talk about.
That’s the difference between marketing a product and activating a brand.
And I love the fact that the creative idea came from my colleagues at FINN Partners Nashville.
My colleague Beth Seigenthaler Courtney captured the personal side beautifully, sharing that her parents used to bribe her and her siblings with an ICEE every Sunday to coax them into behaving at church. Now she’s helping this legendary brand launch its first National ICEE Day.
That’s more than a cute anecdote.
That’s more than a cool anecdote.
That’s the strategy hiding in plain sight. The product isn’t the story. The memory is the story.
And, great campaigns don’t begin with what a brand wants to say—they begin with what the audience already understands and remembers. Learn more about message alignment in the “Why Most Messaging Fails” WordSmith dispatch.
The WordSmith Perspective: Brands Are Built in the Space Between Product and Memory
This is one of my favorite branding principles:
People may buy your product. But they remember the meaning they attach to it.
ICEE has spent decades accumulating that meaning.
Movie theaters. Road trips. Convenience stores. Summer afternoons. Birthday parties. The first time you got the giant cup. The blue tongue. The inevitable brain freeze!
Those memories are brand equity. National ICEE Day simply gives consumers permission to bring them back to life. And it reinforces one of the most important pillars of branding: building trust through repeated experiences that become familiar and cherished. Learn more about building trust.
That’s powerful.
The WordSmith Alignment Model at work
Remember the WordSmith model:
POSITIONING
Know what you own.
ICEE isn’t trying to become something it isn’t.
It owns frozen fun, nostalgia, color, refreshment and childhood joy.
ICEE’s own brand language describes itself as “joyful, carefree & thrilling” and says, “You don’t just drink ICEE—you experience it.”
That’s positioning.
NARRATIVE
Give people a story they can tell.
National ICEE Day isn’t really about a free drink.
It’s about:
“Remember when …”
And everyone has an ICEE story. That’s narrative.
EXECUTION
Give people something to do.
Get the ICEE. Take the picture. Share the memory. Tag the brand. Enter the ICEE Day Challenge.
Now the audience isn’t watching the campaign.
They’re in it.
That’s execution.
Positioning + Narrative + Execution.
That’s the WordSmith Alignment Model in a very cold, very colorful cup.
Takeaway For Every Brand—Not Just ICEE
You don’t have to invent a new identity every time you need attention.
Sometimes the smartest strategy is to mine the equity you’ve already earned.
Ask:
What do people already love about us?
What memories have we created?
What ritual or experience belongs uniquely to our brand?
How can we turn that memory into participation?
That’s where some of the best brand campaigns begin.
Not with:
“What can we say?”
But:
“What can we make people remember?”
The WordSmith Takeaway
Great brands don’t manufacture nostalgia.
They earn it.
Then, when the moment is right, they turn nostalgia into something people can experience again. That’s what makes National ICEE Day more than a free frozen drink.
It’s a reminder that brand equity is an asset—and the smartest marketers know how to activate it.
So here’s to ICEE.
Here’s to Nashville’s own iconic frozen brand.
Here’s to my colleagues at FINN Partners Nashville for finding a fresh way to make an old favorite feel new again.
And here’s to all of us who have ever held an ICEE in our hands and thought:
“Man, I haven’t had one of these in years.”
Until somebody gives us a reason.
Brain freeze and blue tongues never tasted so good!
WORDSMITH’S FINAL SIP
If your brand has a memory, you have a marketing asset.
If your audience has a memory, you have a story.
If you can turn that story into participation, you have a campaign.
That’s how you turn an iconic brand into a cultural moment.
And that’s WordSmithing!
