THE FAMILY ARCHIVE
The Real People Behind Josie
Every family leaves behind photographs. Some preserve faces. Others preserve history.
The people portrayed here inspired the characters, relationships, and emotional heart of Josie. While the novel is a work of historical fiction—with scenes, dialogue, and narrative shaped through imagination and creativity—its foundation rests upon the lives of remarkable individuals whose compassion, courage, and quiet acts of grace changed generations.

MARY “BIG SISTER” COOK CHITTIM
The Family’s Song
Music carried Big Sister, one of W.D. and Nora Cook’s daughters, from Mississippi to concert halls in Europe and classrooms in Colorado, where generations of students learned that great music begins not with technique, but with heart. Yet family remained at the center of her life. Each autumn, as another birthday approached, a familiar package from Gulfport arrived bearing one of Josie’s caramel cakes. Across the years, sisters remained bound by music, memory, and steadfast affection. Long after the applause faded, Big Sister’s voice remained part of the family’s song.
WILLIAM GILBERT “BILL” COOK
The Builder
The eldest of W.D. and Nora’s children, William Gilbert “Bill” Cook inherited his father’s entrepreneurial vision and transformed it into a distinguished career of his own. From his earliest days helping around the family home, the gardens, and Cook Motor Company, Bill displayed an instinct for leadership that eventually carried him from Millsaps College to Columbia University, where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business. Returning to Mississippi, he founded Cook Construction Company and helped shape communities with the same integrity that defined the Cook family. Yet success never diminished his devotion to home. Whether receiving one of Josie’s legendary air-mailed birthday cakes or gathering once again around the family table, Bill remained grounded by the enduring lesson W.D. and Nora taught all their children—that the greatest legacy is measured not by the buildings we leave behind, but by the lives we build within them.
JEWEL COOK WITHERSPOON
The Kitchen Evangelist & Keeper of the Family Table
From the wood-fired kitchen in Forest to demonstration stages across America, Jewel Cook Witherspoon, another daughter of W.D. and Nora Cook (and the author’s grandmother), believed every meal told a story. As a University of Alabama graduate in home economics, she became one of Kelvinator’s celebrated traveling ambassadors, introducing families to the modern electric kitchen with warmth, confidence, and the infectious enthusiasm of a gifted teacher. Yet despite carrying the “Cool Kitchen” gospel across the country, Jewel never forgot where her own culinary education began—beside Nora and Josie, preparing family meals over cast-iron skillets in the Cook and Witherspoon households. Throughout her life, she remained the guardian of that tradition, welcoming generations to the table on Meridian’s 23rd Avenue, where recipes, manners, laughter, and unconditional love were served together.

Through them, the legacy of W.D., Nora, and Josie continues to live not simply in photographs, but in the people who remember, gather, and carry the story forward.

The Legacy Continues

The values of faith, hospitality, compassion, and family remain central to their lives—proof that the smallest acts of love often echo longest.
